Facilities and EquipmentIn 2011, Akron Polymer Systems moved into their new facility in downtown Akron. The new headquarters contains state-of-the-art laboratories, a pilot plant and production space.
Laboratory Equipment
APS has analysis equipment for monomer and polymer characterization, including:
- Metricon Prism Coupler for determination of film thickness and birefringence
- HPLC for organic materials/monomers characterization
- GPC and an automatic viscosity measurement system for polymer molecular weight characterization
- UV-Vis for molecular identification and spectral characterization
- FTIR and Raman spectroscopy for molecular identification and characterization of monomers and polymers
- DSC, TGA, TMA and DMA for thermal analysis of polymers and their films
- Instron for film mechanical property characterization
- APS also utilizes an NMR for molecular characterization and SEM, TEM and AFM instrumentation for film morphology characterization
Pilot Plant
Our facility includes a pilot plant where the syntheses of intermediates, monomers, and polymers can be scaled up to multi-kg quantities. Our equipment includes the following:
- 15 and 50 liter glass reactors and equipped with heating mantles, center cooling coils, temperature controllers and variable speed electrical agitator motors
- 20 and 30 liter jacketed glass reactors equipped with cooling and heating systems
- 5 gallon jacketed stainless steel reactor
- Two-gallon PDC reactor 150 psig rated, Teflon lined, equipped with heating mantle, center cooling coil, temperature controller and variable speed electrical agitator motor
- One-gallon Eberback blender equipped with explosion proof electrical motor
- Thermo Haake CT9OW low temperature (-100°C) circulation bath; 37 mm X 60 cm vacuum jacketed distillation column and associated equipment
- 50-gallon blend tank, 50 psig rated, SS equipped with single speed mag drive agitator
- 50-liter Teflon-lined PDC reactor, 150 psig rated, jacketed variable speed mag drive, center cooling coil, with a heating oil system (up to 230°C)
- Pressure filtration unit
- High shear mixer
